Simple gagnant or simple placé: which one to choose?

The "simple" bet is the most basic bet at the PMU: a single horse. It's often where people start. But it comes in two versions, gagnant (win) and placé (place), and many bettors choose poorly between the two. Here's how to decide.

The principle: a single horse

A simple bet means betting on one horse in a race. Nothing more. It's the ideal bet for beginners, because it's easy to understand and easy to follow during the race.

Simple gagnant (win)

With simple gagnant, your horse must win the race, finish first. If it finishes second, you lose. It's the most demanding version of the simple bet, so it pays the best: you receive the horse's full odds.

Simple placé (place)

With simple placé, your horse only needs to finish among the leaders:

• In races with 8 or more runners: it must finish in the top 3.
• In races with 4 to 7 runners: it must finish in the top 2.
• Below 4 runners, the place bet is generally not offered.

This is much easier to land, but the payout is smaller, since there are several winning places.

Which one to choose

It all depends on what you're after.

• Aiming for a big win and genuinely believe your horse will win? Simple gagnant, to collect the full odds.
• Want to bet regularly with lower risk? Simple placé: your horse just needs to run well.

A cautious approach is to play placé on a good horse you're a bit unsure about, and save the gagnant bet for cases where your conviction is strong. On very short-priced favorites, the placé payout is often very small: at that level, the bet loses much of its appeal.

The real trap: betting on too many races

Whether you choose gagnant or placé, the real mistake isn't the type of bet, it's betting too often. Every stake is subject to the operator's takeout. By multiplying bets without discipline, you lose over time. It's better to pick your races and only bet when there's a good reason to.
